Edward T. Borer died on August 16, 2025, at the age of 86. Except for military service, he lived in Swarthmore, PA, from 1952 to 1995. From then until 2020, he and his wife, Amy, restored a historic home in Chester County, later moving to White Horse Village, Edgmont Township, where he resided until his death.
Ed’s career began in 9th grade, working summers at what became Hopper Soliday & Co., Inc., a regional securities broker and investment advisor. Rising to president, he resigned in 1989, after Hopper went public on the NYSE (HSC), and founded Philadelphia Corp. for Investment Services. From 1979 to 2000, he also chaired EnergyNorth, Inc. (NYSE: ENI), New Hampshire’s largest natural gas distributor. In 2005, he founded Borer Denton & Associates, Inc., a boutique registered investment advisor, and served as its chairman until his death. Ed graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1960, with a degree in economics.
Deeply engaged in the securities industry, Ed chaired the District 10 Business Conduct Committee of the National Association of Securities Dealers (now FINRA), served as an arbitrator for the New York and Philadelphia Stock Exchanges, AAA, and NASD/FINRA, and participated in FINRA enforcement panels. He was treasurer and president of the Philadelphia Securities Association and Treasurer of the Philadelphia Society of Securities Analysts. A Chartered Financial Analyst®, he held numerous securities licenses.
Outside finance, Ed was detail-oriented and curious, with a love of clocks, puzzles, and woodworking. He was an accomplished pilot, rated for high-performance land and sea planes and instrument certified. He also was deeply involved in his community. Through the years, he served Trinity Church, Swarthmore; the Swarthmore Nativity Pageant; the National Kidney Foundation, Philadelphia; Chester County Historical Society; and St. John’s Episcopal Church, Glen Mills, where he was a reader and chalicist.
Ed cared deeply for his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He was predeceased by Amy, his wife of 62 years, his parents, and his brother, Robert. He is survived by his three children, Edward Borer, Jr. (Nancy Lehman), Catherine Borer (Ron Miller), and Elizabeth Borer (Eric Seabloom), and six grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to St. John’s Episcopal Church of Glen Mills, or the National Kidney Foundation.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Glen Mills, PA, at 11 AM on November 22, 2025.
