Obituary of Alma E. Farraday

Alma E. Farraday (nee Maloney) age 92, of Mullica Hill, NJ (formerly of Media, PA) joined her savior, her husband and her son on Sunday May 10, 2020. A loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Alma went quietly home after a brief and sudden medical diagnosis. All who knew Alma, loved her greatly and know her as a strong woman who faced great challenges with grace and dignity throughout her life. She was the steady force of the family with a great smile and laugh and always kind words for everyone. Married to her husband George for 48 years until he left us, they raised their family in Middletown, PA and moved to Mullica Hill in 1999 to live with their daughter and husband and to assist in raising their grandchildren. They had the joy of early retirement and travelled in Europe and Alaska as well as toured the US in their RV motor home enjoying exploration and time together visiting relatives near and far. Alma was a proud graduate of Chester High School class of (1946) and immediately entered Chester Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her Registered Nurse diploma receiving the Surgical Nurse award at graduation. She began her career at the Veteran Administration Hospital in Elsmere, Delaware, continued her career at Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester and eventually joined the staff at Riddle Memorial Hospital as a surgical nurse until her retirement. At 92, she still drove her car and was active in the community as a member of the Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit in Mullica Hill, NJ, participating in the senior group as well as the senior group of Harrison Township, NJ. She became an avid Phillies and Eagles fan and loved engaging in conversations about the teams with her son-in-laws Larry and John as well as her grandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting, building puzzles and games, especially Scrabble and Scattegories. Most of all, Alma was a dedicated grandmother, having a very active hand in raising all of her grandchildren, attending their sporting events and school activities, and spoiling her great grandchildren who brought her great joy. Alma was the center of the family and had a profound influence not only on her children, but also on her grandchildren, for whom she was a grandmother, friend, advocate and confidant. All of her grandchildren knew they could reach out to her for advice or for friendship at any time. Mom-mom would always provide a helping and comforting presence to ease anyone’s fears or worries. We will forever hold her in our hearts and remember all the great times and never forget to carry on all the family traditions. Alma was known for sweet potatoes at the holidays, ‘best cheesecake ever’ and a large tomato garden to share. We know in our hearts it was time to return home to spend this Mother’s Day with her son in heaven and to laugh once again with her husband. Preceded in death by her husband George and her son Charles as well as her parents James and Alma Maloney.
