She was educated when most women weren't.
She made her own way when most women didn't.
She had her children late in life, before that became popular.
Widowed, she didn't smile for a year.
Newly single again, she went to the movies on her own and started reading novels.
Aging, she moved into a life-plan community, making the decision rather than having it made for her.
She always strode forth bravely.
She was there my whole life.
Now, no more cards, no more news clippings, no more recountings of gatherings missed.
No more trips to Stein-Mart.
And whatever stories of past generations we wanted, we better have gotten.
Good-bye, Aunt Dot. I love you. I'll miss you. Your life made space for my life.
Peace be upon you.
